The Categories
One of the most frustrating things about so many screenwriting contests – both for the writers and for the judges – is that scripts of different genres are in competition with each other. But how do you compare a comedy to a sci-fi script? How do you rank a family film against a thriller?
Moreover, why is it that so many screenwriting contests only reward the writer who creates a powerful drama, while many of Hollywood's most successful movies are comedies, thrillers, action flicks and family films?
In order to address this problem, and to encourage the development of a wide range of screenwriting talent, the PAGE Awards competition rewards excellence in a variety of genres and formats.
This year, prizes will be awarded in the following ten categories:
FEATURE FILM SCRIPTS (80-130 pages)
ACTION/ADVENTURE All types of action scripts, war stories, westerns, and adventure tales (RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, KILL BILL, LETHAL WEAPON, SPEED)
COMEDY Light and dark comedies, romantic comedies, farces, spoofs, satires (GHOSTBUSTERS, PRETTY WOMAN, AMERICAN PIE, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE)
DRAMA All types of dramatic scripts, dramedies, romances and tragedies (AMERICAN BEAUTY, GOOD WILL HUNTING, LEAVING LAS VEGAS, THE GRADUATE, PHILADELPHIA)
FAMILY FILM Live-action and animated children's stories, holiday tales, fantasies, movies for the whole family (SHREK, LORD OF THE RINGS, FLIPPER, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE, MARY POPPINS)
HISTORICAL FILM Scripts based on true historical characters and events, biopics, docudramas (ERIN BROCKOVICH, AMISTAD, GANDHI, BRAVEHEART, SHINE)
SCIENCE FICTION Stories about futuristic technologies, time and space travel, extraterrestrials, apocalyptic and alien worlds (STAR WARS, THE MATRIX, BLADE RUNNER, BRAZIL, MEN IN BLACK)
THRILLER/HORROR Murder mysteries, crime and detective stories, psychological thrillers, ghost tales, monster movies (FATAL ATTRACTION, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, MEMENTO, SCREAM, JAWS)
SHORT FILM SCRIPTS (under 40 pages)
SHORT FILM Live-action and animated short film scripts of all genres
ORIGINAL TV PILOTS (30-70 pages)

(PLEASE NOTE: We do not accept novels, short stories, stage plays, treatments or synopses, reality show concepts, or spec scripts for existing TV series.
